- Systems Administration for several UNIX fileservers, associated workstations,
Novell fileservers and PCs.
- Campus email administration. This includes:
- Local switching services, delivering messages to many UNIX and Novell
fileservers.
- Manchester area switching, conversion for sites which run only
a subset of available protocols.
- International routing, in collaboration with the various national gateways.
- Configuration and registration of new hosts or sites.
- Hardware and software support.
- Usenet administration. This includes:
- Local news services, providing a article repository for many UNIX, PC
and Mac newsreaders around the campus.
- Support of local newsreading.
- Care and watering for both local and remote news software.
- Local feeding, to several of the larger departments.
- An increasing amount of national feeding, currently with 15 feed sites.
- Mail to news (and vice-versa) conversions for certain groups.
- Support and consolidation of various network user databases, including
the Central email database.
- General UNIX support, particularly for BSD-based systems.
- TCP/IP support, particularly in the area of intermittent fault analysis.
- Novell support, especially where this involves TCP/IP.
- Administrator support, including ongoing support to many UMIST facilities.
- Overseeing the work of the Network Mail Officer and, where appropriate,
other colleagues.
- Participation in technical and policy group discussions.
- Continuing support to UMIST Library, resource provision and technical
support for the ``Online Reference Library'' project.
- Close cooperation with hardware and software suppliers in order to fix
faults.
- C and C++, and associated software, support.
- Linux support and administration.
