- Administration, use of and user support for a Sun UNIX fileserver and cluster
of workstations, for the ECF and UMIST, including:
- General systems administration.
- Kernel configuration and maintainence, especially for networking.
- Bug reporting, liaison with manufacturers and software authors.
- General user support, problem tracking and report generation.
- Documentation, manuals, course contributions, proof-reading.
- Management of junior colleagues, liaison with senior management and
policy committees, general administration.
- X-Windows support; a major evaluation of
a number of X-Windows packages for Sun workstations, and performance testing of
several X-Terminals.
- I.C. design software enhancements under ESPRIT funding.
- Central systems (VM/CMS, VM/UTS) user support for MCC/USU.
- PC and Novell support and administration for MCC.
- Support of the Joule Library's software and services on the UMIST Prime 9955.
- Applications support and advice: word processing, databases, DTP, etc.
- Miscellaneous Systems and Support work.
- Much systems-level network-related work, including:
- TCP/IP and related Internet protocols for the JNT's Shoestring project,
running IP over X25.
- Responsibility for new network connections: software installation and
configuration, and, where appropriate, hardware installation.
- Overseeing the day-to-day operation of network hardware and
software, fault-finding and reporting.
- Usenet News administration; several local UKNet news feeds and a
mail-to-news relay fed from Kyushu University (Japan).
- UNIX mail administration and development, in addition to Campus
Email Server.
- Mail routing from X.25 to TCP/IP for several UNIX machines.
- Mail routing from TCP/IP to Novell, using Charon.
- Mail user interface evaluation and support.
- Providing ``Postmaster'' support to colleagues both locally and
internationally.
- DNS, BOOTP and RARP services for UMIST.
