Systems Officer: SERC/ECF Prime, UMIST ('82-'87)

• Collaboration with Science and Engineering Research Council staff at Rutherford Laboratories.
• Technical advice and support to users and managers of 22 networked Prime multiuser minicomputer systems.
• Design, implementation, maintenance and operation of several major software projects, including:
  1. Grey Book Electronic Mail Server, which long provided the Central Email Service for Manchester University, MCC and UMIST.
  2. Spooled Magnetic Tape Archival System, providing offline storage and online catalogues.
  3. Automatic Software Updating System, providing easy-to-install software updates to remote sites.
• Many minor software projects, including several which were long-lived.
• SERC PRIMOS development, senior OS programmer.
• PRIMOS Networking, X25, most Coloured Books, UK Name Registration Scheme (NRS).
• Email support and development. Liaison with many sites on JANET, PSS, US and overseas networks.
• Training of junior Systems Officer.
• Much miscellaneous Systems and Support work.
